    A Client Story

A young woman with three children arrived at Loaves and Fishes one day while we were preparing and serving our hot meals. She seemed very quiet and reserved. When asked if we could help her in any way, tears came to her eyes and she said, “My husband has left us and taken everything with him. We have no food, only a few clothes, and no pots, pans or dishes. I don’t know where to go, but a friend told me to come here to see if we can get some help.”
After talking awhile we learned she was still in the house with utilities, but did not know where to go. She was looking for a job, but had not been successful. We immediately advised that we could help her with a supply of food to get her started, and then we sat down and talked further about her problems. We had recently had household items dropped at our site, and were able to find a few pots and pans, as well as dishes, cutlery, a few linens and other items to help the family through their transition. We also discussed possibilities of where she might get a job quickly, and the subject of a church came up. She needed a church that provided a good child activity group for her children. We immediately gave her names of churches that we personally know have good activity groups for children and she was very thankful.
About a week later, we were once again faced with a tearful mother, but this time it was tears of joy. She had been able to find a job, as well as a person to care for her small ones while she was working, and had visited one of the churches that had a youth group and was happy with it. She continues to come to our site when she needs help, but each time again thankfully says, “I don’t know what I would have done if you had not taken the time to visit with me the day I came in here. I will always remember all of you, and what you did for me. And if I am ever able to get my life back in order, I want to help you in any way I can.”
